 Vintage Kid's Books

Posted 26/7/09

I went shopping last week, and I mean all of last week. Everyday had me out searching for some new goodies, and I found some great books. I purchased a William paperback by Richmal Crompton, I will need to repair the spine before I put it up for sale, it's a dear little illustrated Armada dated 1965, and the original price was 2/6d. I think I'll read it first, and then guess what? It will probably go into my collection. Here it is, don't you just love it? One hard cover I bought, which is definitely going into my own collection, is this one by Enid Blyton. I collect dog books and have some beauties. I love it when I find one with the dust wrapper. I'll repair this one, as it has some closed tears along the edges, I'm so excited about it ! Here's a couple more from my dog collection: I have a shelf dedicated to dogs, I like to look at the covers! As you can see I collect hard and soft covers, but I love those with dust wrappers best. I'll photograph some more of them to show you. I have Jack London, Jim Kjelgaard, Thomas Hinkle, O'Brian, some are so sad to read. I get a bit weepy over animal stories, I have a huge collection, from novels like Watership Down to The Incredible Journey, onto Black Beauty and Lassie Come Home. Well - I didn't just buy William and Enid, I also purchased a box of comics, and take a look at a couple of treasures buried amongst them. Can you believe it? Lost In Space. "Danger Will Robinson". But there's more!! Yes - Danny Thomas. I will have to get out my Overstreet guide to price these. I bought the whole lot for around $AU50 and I think this one of Danny Thomas will repay me plus, not to mention the Conan (with pics of Arnie) and an old copy with the first appearance of Red Sonja. I just love garage sales and op shops. All these have been photographed and are now packed away snuggly in their ultra pro archiveable bags. I feel a sense of achievement, and just a little bit smug for finding them. My son Paul already has his eye on Lost in Space and Red Sonja, he's too young to have heard of Danny Thomas, so that one's safe... that is, until I tell him how much it is worth!! Here's the Conans. I hope you enjoy them all as much as I have enjoyed showing them to you.

 Until next time, cheers Ursula.

Baby elephant on show for the first time today

posted 10th Feb, 2010

My thoughts for this week are about speech and the English language. I had the misfortune to listen to a bright young pair on the radio this morning; my husband chose a station at random last night and set our new alarm clock for 8 this morning, and I awoke to the sounds of mindless banter between two very young presenters, on some unknown breakfast show,  trying very hard to sound intelligent; but it was their language that set my teeth on edge - not foul language, just the fact that they couldn't speak a language. After prattling about politics in a juvenile way, she then mentioned some 'unrelevant' information she'd share with him later. Now I've heard of unprofitable, unsolicited, untimely, untruth, unworthy and even unperson, amongst others, but never 'unrelevant'. I found the use of this word unsavoury, unprecedented, unprofessional, unskilled and it should be unutterable.

I think the word she was trying to say was 'irrelevant', which was exactly what she had become to me; she was also irredeemable and irrecoverable as a presenter,  I on the other hand, am irrepressible when it comes to the irreverent use of our language.

I'm also unremitting when it comes to picking on people for phonetic spelling, such as dayz, luv, color,   but it really sets my teeth on edge when people make up words. Youtube uses the word 'favourited' as in "Ursula favourited a video clip"

Anyone know of  any other stupid made up words??

 To Kill a Mockingbird

Posted 21/6/09

I've spent the last week wondering if I had Swine 'flu, I've been so ill. But no, it wasn't. Trust me to get another virus no one ever heard of. I thought it might be Yuppie 'flu at one stage, as I could hardly drag myself from bed. I couldn't even read because for 2 days even my eyes hurt! Hence, no computer and no posts. The doc ordered blood tests and all that usual stuff, but now I'm just to stay home and, yep! rest. It's pretty cold here in Aus at the moment, so I've been up since yesterday, curled up in front of the fire, toasting my toes, and visiting with an old friend.
I've travelled pretty well all around the world, but I have to say I wouldn't swap Melbourne weather for anything. I love the 4 seasons in one day that happen here; most would say I'm crazy. I think Vivaldi must have visited Victoria!  It can rain in the morning, hit 22C° in the afternoon and drop to 4C° at night. It can hit the 40C°s in Summer (this year hit 48°-49C°), and sometimes in winter it snows in my backyard. I just love it. Actually I love Spring, Autumn and Winter best, Summer is getting too hot as I get older. Those once loved high temps., now just exhaust me, and being so fair skinned, I burn easily. That 'old friend' I visited, was in fact To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I watched the movie with Gregory Peck not so long ago, one of the few films true to the original book. I hope there are not too many out there who haven't read this wonderful book. Here's a copy of the cover from the first edition, a rare and very expensive edition to own (unfortunately I don't own a first, but I do own at least 3 copies, one strictly for reading only). For those who have never read it, please do. Set in South Alabama during the depression, this pulitzer-prize winner dissects the white and black communities of the American South. Atticus Finch is a lawyer, who defends a black man against a false rape charge, making Atticus and his family the focus of a backward communities fear, hate and prejudices. It must be one of the most powerful novels written, with the story being told through the gentle humour of Scout, Atticus' daughter; her innocent child's view of the world making the story more poignant and real. Atticus is a rare thing, a really good man, who cannot ignore the plight of Tom, his client, even though it places his family at risk. Through the main battle there are sub plots of course, one in which Jeb, Atticus' son learns the meaning of real courage. A lovely, lovely book. Well I haven't finished this dip into it yet, even though I know it so well each read brings me something new; I'm back to the fire again! Cheers Ursula

Yummy Coffee Cake Recipes and Hummingbird Cake

Well, I've spent the whole day on the computer, but as usual was sidetracked into visiting other people's blogs, and I joined a couple of groups that look interesting. I try to visit at least one new blog a day, but sometimes these lead to another...and another...and another. I was going to work on my comic shop, and ended up working on the blog and news page from the book shop, then I messed up frontpage and had my tables jumping all over the screen when I viewed them in firefox. I still don't understand why somethings work OK in explorer, but appear so different in firefox. I've now added a comments box to my website, so we'll see what comes of that (that's what caused all the table misshaps). I completed a great ebook, which took me away from Mrs Beeton again. It's all about favourite coffee cake recipes, and of course I had to try a few, and do photos. Also cooked some rhubarb from a Mrs B recipe, it was delicious. Very simple, just some sugar syrup, vanilla and a couple of cloves in the pot, and then we had it with cream and custard. Here's one of the original pages from Mrs B's book, on sweets and desserts. Here's one of the recipes for Hummingbird Cake from my eBook: In the book I have included full tables of oven temps (C to F) and gms to ounces etc.,so it took some time.

Hummingbird Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting Ingredients: * 3 cups all-purpose flour * 2 cups granulated sugar * 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 2 teaspoons baking soda * 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon * 3 eggs, beaten * 1 1/4 cups vegetable oil * 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract * 1 can (8oz) crushed pineapple, well drained * 1 cup chopped pecans * 2 cups chopped firm ripe banana * . * Cream Cheese Frosting: * 450gms (16 ounces) cream cheese, softened * 1 cup butter, room temperature * 900gms (2 pounds) confectioners' (icing) sugar * 2 teaspoons vanilla extract * 1/2 to 1 cup chopped pecans Preparation: Preheat oven to 190-200C (350°F). Sift flour, sugar, salt, baking soda and cinnamon together into mixing bowl several times. Add eggs and salad oil to the dry ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon until ingredients are moistened. Stir in vanilla, pineapple and 1 cup pecans. Stir in the bananas. Spoon the batter into 3 well-greased and floured 9-inch round cake pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes,or until a wooden pick or cake tester inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn onto cooling rack. Cool completely before frosting. Cream Cheese Frosting: Combine cream cheese and butter; cream until smooth. Add powdered sugar, beating with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Stir in vanilla. Frost the tops of all 3 layers, stack and then frost sides. Sprinkle top evenly with the 1/2 to 1 cup chopped pecans. In the book I have included over 100 recipes for some delicious cakes . Here's a couple of pics of the finished cakes. Yummy!! Everything from chocolate, berries, fruits, sour cream and nuts. Something for everyone. Now all I have to do is find an excuse to make them again. Thankfully I can't eat much cake these days, but I do love to bake them all.

My Daughter's Hen's Night

Posted 30/5/09        I found this pic of my daughter and myself at her Hen's night. She wore this crazy veil that lit up and sparkled with the words "Bride" flashing on and off. It was a fun night. I hadn't really wanted to go, but she insisted. We are actually pretty good friends, and I love her to bits. Her name is also Ursula (as was my mum's and her mother before her), I'm a lucky mum, as all my kids seem to like being with me a lot. Although none of them live at home any longer, I do see or hear from them every day. My son Paul just brought home a new computer for me yesterday. I now have 500gig HD and 4gig RAM, after surviving on a 40gigHD and 1 gig RAM, I feel like I'm flying. My hubby is sooo jealous. I'll dig out a good photo of Paul and post that also. Better get back to my installing (that's what I was doing when I got sidetracked & started looking at all the photos I had on the old system), bye, Ursula. Comments:
